Greyhound Friend, Inc. is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. We participate in many community activities and other events on a regular basis and we invite anyone who would like to participate to join us. It is a wonderful opportunity to get to know greyhounds or show off your greyhound and let the dogs be ambassadors of good will. Volunteering is fun and is very rewarding in any capacity. We encourage everyone to give it a try and help out in any number of the activites listed below.
We also are always in need of our "wish list" of kennel supplies. This includes household items you may be throwing away anyways. Instead donate it to Greyhound Friends. Our complete wish list is found below.
Volunteer Opportunities Include:
1. Foster Homes: Caring foster parents are ALWAYS needed. If you would like to foster a greyhound for a few days, a few weeks or a few months let us know. In most cases foster parents are needed for a short time to take care of a dog who has been neutered/spayed or some other medical procedure that needs a little extra attention and care or a temporary shortage of kennel space. Fostering for a few weeks to a month is quite helpful when many dogs are being retired at once and there is not enough room to house everyone at the kennel. Longer term (2-3 months) foster care is required for a dog that may have had extensive medical treatment or is exceptionally shy and needs time in a home with another greyhound and gentle understanding parents. Warning! There is a shortage of foster parents because many of them adopt their wards!
2. Kennel Help: If you would like to help with activities such as grooming dogs, providing socialization and TLC - especially for the shy dogs, taking dogs for runs in our fenced field, taking dogs for walks, assisting the staff with all phases of greyhound care such as laundry, cleaning the cages, and kitchen work, assisting with clerical activities and other kennel chores, call Louise Coleman at 508-435-5969.
3. Transportation: If you would like to help pick up and transport dogs and/or pick up food/donations call Louise Coleman at 508-435-5969 or Barbara Wicklund at 908-874-0508.
6. Help out at Meet and Greets (you don't need a greyhound either)
7. Get the word out by displaying our posters in your town and/or workplace
8. Organize a donation drive
9. Consider Homegift when buying or selling a home.
